While it’s normal for our bodies to sweat, some people have a condition called hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis, or increased production of sweat, can have a deeply detrimental effect on a person’s quality of life, resulting in dramatic impact of daily activities, social interactions and occupational activities. It is as common a disorder as psoriasis. And it may affect up to 2.8% of the population. However, people rarely seek a physician’s help because many are unaware that they have a treatable condition.
Many people just see excessive sweating as an uncontrollable and embarrassing sweating of the armpits. People with this condition have generally lived a life worrying about how this problem will affect them every day. They have lived with sweat dripping down their bodies on the coolest of days. They’ve been to countless events or just out in public where they’ve been mortified because of the sweating armpits of their clothing. They’ve used every product they can find in the store and online to help combat excessive sweating, to no avail.
Luckily, there is a treatment out there to help. In 2004, the FDA approved the use of Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) in the treatment of severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis.
If you think you might have severe underarm sweating, speak with our physician. Only a medical professional can diagnose severe underarm sweating that is not being managed effectively with clinical-strength antiperspirants.
When you arrive at your appointment, please be prepared to discuss your history with our physician. He will ask you many questions regarding the types of products you have tried to reduce or eliminate your sweating including which antiperspirants, deodorants and powders. He will also ask you other questions which will help assist him in your diagnosis.
Botox temporarily blocks the chemical signals to the nerves in the underarms. This temporarily prevents the sweat glands from over producing sweat in the area injected with Botox until the Botox wears off.
If Botox is right for you, it can provide you with up to 200 days of drier underarms with only one treatment. That’s over six months of drier underarms and much less worry.
